This isn’t just any temple. The Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles has a rich history. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of Japanese Buddhism in America. Founded in 1904 by Reverend Junjyo Izumida the temple began its journey on East Fourth Street.
Reverend Izumida a visionary priest envisioned a place of worship open to all. He wasn’t just serving the Japanese community. His bilingual skills helped him reach out to a wider audience in Los Angeles. The temple moved several times. It found homes on San Julian Street in Little Tokyo Savannah Street and finally to 118 North Mott Street in Boyle Heights. This last location was its home for fifty years.
The current temple structure a magnificent example of Japanese architecture rose in 1976. Its location a return to Little Tokyo signifies the temple’s deep roots in the community. Imagine construction workers from Japan installing a time capsule on the rooftop. That time capsule remains a silent chronicle of the temple’s past.
More than a place of worship Higashi Honganji has served as a community center. It housed a judo-kendo dojo an orphanage and a Japanese language school. Today the temple is home to the Lumbini Child Development Center a thriving preschool and kindergarten. The temple’s Centennial Celebration in 2004 marked 100 years of Buddhism in Los Angeles.
Within the main chapel you’ll see stunning lanterns adorning the ceiling. A magnificent statue of Amida Buddha sits majestically on the altar.
