In 1983, a spark ignited in Berlin’s academic heart. From the Technische Universität Berlin emerged IAV GmbH. IAV, short for Ingenieurgesellschaft Auto und Verkehr, translates to “Engineer Society Automobile and Traffic”. This seemingly simple name belies the company’s profound impact on the automotive world. IAV began as a university-affiliated research institute under the guidance of Professor Dr. Hermann Appel. Imagine a small team of engineers, fueled by innovation, setting out to revolutionize vehicle technology. Their initial focus was powertrain, electronics, and vehicle development, areas ripe for advancement. IAV quickly gained recognition for its forward-thinking designs and practical solutions. This attracted clients like Volkswagen Group, BMW, and Porsche, just to name a few. Over the years, IAV expanded its reach. The company established development centers in Chemnitz and Gifhorn, Germany. It also ventured internationally with locations in countries like France, the United Kingdom, China, and the United States. IAV’s portfolio boasts contributions to iconic projects like Volkswagen’s 1-Liter car. They also adapted the 5-cylinder TDI engine for the Volvo 850. Even the eco-friendly VW Polo, equipped with a diesel particulate filter as early as 1987, benefited from IAV’s expertise. Today, IAV employs over 7,600 people worldwide and continues to push the boundaries of automotive engineering. Here, at IAV’s Berlin headquarters, the legacy of innovation continues.
