Hidden within the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum in Vista, California, lies the Q – Short Track Railroad. This isn’t your typical railroad. It’s a testament to the passion and dedication of model railroad enthusiasts. The Q – Short Track Railroad began its journey in 1991. Four modelers in San Diego County envisioned a unique NTRAK layout for the 1992 National Model Railroad Association convention in Laughlin, Nevada. Their initial creation was modest: eight modules forming a 10′ x 10′ layout. Most of these original pieces, now refurbished, still grace the Q – Short Track Railroad today. The club’s early meetings took place in the back of Short’s Hobbies in Escondido. The shop owner, Marilyn Short, generously provided the space. As a tribute to her kindness, the club adopted the name “Short Track Railroad”. After their successful debut in Laughlin, the club blossomed, gaining members and modules. They expanded their reach, showcasing their growing railroad at schools, churches, and retirement homes. They continued attending regional conventions and even the 1996 NMRA National Convention in Long Beach. The Q – Short Track Railroad was a regular presence at the Great American Train Shows, often receiving top honors. In 1998, they landed a contract to exhibit at the San Diego County Fair. This marked a turning point. Then, in 2002, they found a permanent home at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum. The Q – Short Track Railroad continued to evolve. They embarked on ambitious projects, including the construction of a section house at the museum in 2003. In 2006, they laid the first tracks for the DPE layout. This dedication to expansion and improvement has shaped the Q – Short Track Railroad into the impressive display it is today.
