Hidden amongst Dortmund’s bustling streets lies the tranquil 1. Ev. Friedhof. This isn’t just any cemetery. It’s a living testament to Brackel’s history, intertwined with the stories of its people. The 1. Ev. Friedhof sits between Oberdorfstraße and Hörder Straße. It was born out of necessity in 1862. A cholera outbreak forced the community to relocate burials away from the church. The old Kirchhof, where generations rested, including Brackel’s reformer Arent Rupe, was deemed too close to the living. The new 7000 square meter plot offered a safer space for mourning. The cost of 2000 Thalers, a hefty sum in those days, was met through the sale of burial plots and a loan. Imagine the families, some Brackeler farmers, purchasing plots along the east hedge. They adorned them with elaborate monuments, reflecting the era’s style. Some of these grand memorials still stand today, whispers of a bygone time. Pfarrer Cremer, foreseeing Brackel’s growth, expanded the 1. Ev. Friedhof in 1891. This expansion came at a cost. The old Kirchhof had to be decommissioned. The remains were moved, revealing glimpses into the past. Coins, remnants of a curious superstition involving bottled fluids, and traces of lives lived long ago were unearthed. In 1902, a mortuary was built on Hörder Straße, designed for “speeches and bad weather.” However, it quickly deteriorated and was later converted into a residence. The current chapel, with its unique cinema-repurposed woodwork from the old Linnenbrink Kino, was inaugurated in 1954. The community youth played a significant role, contributing their labor to its construction. For years, a glass hearse, drawn by a horse, carried the deceased through Brackel’s streets. The Trauergemeinde, or mourners, would follow, their path leading to the 1. Ev. Friedhof. Today, the 1. Ev. Friedhof continues to serve the community. It stands as a peaceful sanctuary amidst a bustling city, a place where stories unfold, memories are cherished, and history rests beneath the ancient trees.
