Hidden amidst Lille’s bustling streets flows L’Elnon a small but significant stream. Its waters have witnessed centuries of history. This unassuming waterway holds a fascinating past.

L’Elnon is more than just a stream. It’s a border between France and Belgium. Its 18-kilometer course weaves through the landscape. The stream’s name itself is steeped in mystery. Three possible origins exist. One suggests its name comes from “elo” (birch tree) and “enn” (river). Another points to “Elnonis palus” a 7th-century reference possibly derived from “Helena” a medicinal plant. A third theory simply labels it as “marshy”. Local dialect even suggests a transformation from “Lannon” to “Elnon”. L’Elnon’s journey begins near Bachy and Cobrieux at an altitude of around 63 meters. It’s a relatively gentle descent. The stream is crossed by numerous structures. Four thresholds and eight bridges punctuate its path. Ultimately L’Elnon flows into the Décours River a tributary of the Scarpe.

L’Elnon’s basin covers approximately 77 square kilometers. A significant portion lies within Belgium. The stream’s flow varies. In winter higher water levels sometimes cause flooding. The basin comprises a mix of farmland and natural areas. Fifty-five percent is dedicated to agriculture. The remaining land is a mixture of pastures and forests. L’Elnon’s history is intertwined with that of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux. Before the arrival of Saint Amand the town was known as Elnon. The saint later established a significant abbey there before moving to Ghent.

Imagine the centuries of life surrounding L’Elnon. Farmers tending their fields. Villagers crossing its bridges. The stream has been a constant presence. Its waters have borne witness to countless events. Its quiet flow speaks volumes. Its continuous presence is a testament to the enduring power of nature. The modest L’Elnon quietly continues its course a hidden thread in Lille’s rich tapestry. L’Elnon’s story is one of quiet persistence. It’s a story embedded in the very heart of Lille. It’s a story waiting to be discovered by those who take the time to listen.
