The Greenbelt Nature Center serves as the central hub for a wide array of Greenbelt activities and programs. Inside, you can explore the Richmond County Savings Foundation exhibits. These exhibits offer insights into the Greenbelt’s rich history, diverse geography, and fascinating flora and fauna. You can also find displays about current events and happenings within the Greenbelt. As you walk the grounds, take note of the innovative “Flexi-pave” walkways. These walkways are not only visually appealing but also environmentally friendly, made from recycled materials. Their installation was also made possible by the Richmond County Savings Foundation.
The Greenbelt Nature Center is more than just a museum. It’s a vibrant learning center, hosting the “Into the Outdoors” public programs. These programs cater to all ages and interests, encompassing art workshops, author lectures, performances, and guided hikes throughout the year. Wide overhangs keep the building cool in the summer, reducing energy consumption. A compost bin showcases the center’s commitment to sustainable practices, as a NYC Compost Demonstration site. A rain barrel collects rainwater, which is then used to water the vibrant flowering annuals and native species landscaping, minimizing the need for additional watering.
But the Greenbelt Nature Center isn’t just for learning and exploring. It’s also a place for celebration. The center is available for rent for family events and corporate gatherings. Imagine hosting your special occasion surrounded by the beauty of the Greenbelt. The Greenbelt Nature Center is open year-round, offering programs on weekends and evenings too. From April to November, the center is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm. From November to March, it’s open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 am to 5 pm. They also have extended hours during special programs.
