“Gardens of Perfect Brightness” is what Yuanmingyuan means. Today we stand before what was once the majestic entrance to the Yang Family Flower Garden. But its story is not just one of beauty. It also holds a painful chapter in China’s history.
The Yang Family Flower Garden was part of the Old Summer Palace. The Old Summer Palace was also known as Yuanmingyuan Park. It was the main imperial residence. The Qianlong Emperor of the Qing dynasty and his successors lived here. They handled state affairs here. The Forbidden City was used for formal ceremonies.
Imagine this area in its prime. Hundreds of structures stood here. There were halls pavilions temples galleries gardens lakes and bridges. It covered an area almost five times the size of the Forbidden City.
But the splendor didn’t last. French and British troops captured the palace in 1860 during the Second Opium War. They looted and destroyed the imperial collections. The British High Commissioner to China ordered its complete destruction. This was in retaliation for the imprisonment and torture of an Anglo-French delegation.
It took 3500 British troops three days to set the Old Summer Palace ablaze. The fire was massive. It lasted for three days. About 300 remaining eunuchs and palace maids perished in the inferno. They were hiding from the soldiers.
Many treasures were lost forever. Sculptures porcelain jade silk robes and gold objects disappeared. UNESCO says these items are now in 47 museums around the world.
The burning of the Old Summer Palace remains a sensitive issue in China. Many see it as a barbaric and criminal act. Victor Hugo called it two robbers breaking into a museum. He hoped France would one day feel guilty and return what it plundered.
Today the Yang Family Flower Garden stands in ruins. These ruins remind us of the past. They tell a story of both imperial grandeur and devastating destruction.
The site was reclaimed in the 1980s. It was turned into a historical site. There are debates about rebuilding the Imperial Gardens. Some oppose it. They say it would destroy an important relic of modern Chinese history.
As you explore this area consider the weight of history. Think about the beauty that once existed and the tragedy that unfolded. The Yang Family Flower Garden is more than just ruins. It is a symbol of China’s national wound. It is a reminder of resilience and the enduring spirit of a nation.
