San Sebastiano, the church’s namesake, is a fascinating figure. He was a Roman soldier martyred for his Christian faith. The story goes that he was shot with arrows, left for dead, but miraculously survived. He then confronted Emperor Diocletian, only to be clubbed to death. This church, dedicated to him, holds a special energy, a blend of serenity and defiance. The festival of San Sebastiano, held here in August, is something truly special. Imagine a gilded cart bearing the statue of the saint, carried on the shoulders of men in red and white, emerging from the church. This is the “sciuta,” the highlight of the celebration. The air crackles with anticipation. The crowd roars “Viva San Sebastiano!” Explosions of colored paper ribbons fill the air. It’s a sensory overload, a chaotic yet beautiful spectacle. And amidst all this, babies are offered up to the statue for blessings, sometimes even stripped naked to mirror the saint’s vulnerability. It’s a unique tradition, a testament to the deep devotion and slightly bizarre customs that make this festival so unforgettable. It’s a whirlwind of emotions, from the electrifying energy of the sciuta to the touching vulnerability of the blessed babies. This church and its festival embody the heart of Sicilian tradition.
