Perched atop Grymes Hill stands Wagner College a beacon of learning overlooking the New York Harbor. Its history isn’t just about books and lectures. It’s a story of transformation a journey from a small seminary to a prominent liberal arts college.

Founded in 1883 in Rochester New York as the Lutheran Proseminary of Rochester its original purpose was to train Lutheran ministers. Imagine young men diligently studying both English and German. Their goal was to serve the large German immigrant community. The curriculum a rigorous six-year program mirrored the German gymnasium system. A significant change occurred in 1886. It was renamed Wagner Memorial Lutheran College thanks to John G Wagner’s generous donation. This gift allowed the college to purchase a new building in Rochester. The name honored his son.

A dramatic shift came in 1918. President Frederick Sutter spearheaded a move to Staten Island. The college acquired the former Cunard estate on Grymes Hill. The Cunard mansion Westwood now Cunard Hall still stands. It’s a beautiful Italianate villa a silent witness to the college’s evolution. The estate’s original 38 acres expanded to 57 acres with the acquisition of the neighboring Jacob Vanderbilt estate in 1922.

The college’s curriculum gradually transformed into an American-style liberal arts program. New York State granted it degree-granting status in 1928 a pivotal moment. Women were admitted in 1933 marking another important milestone. Graduate programs were introduced in 1951 further solidifying Wagner College’s academic standing. The campus continued to grow acquiring more land in 1949 and 1993. Today Wagner College boasts 105 acres offering breathtaking views of the New York Harbor the Verrazzano Bridge Downtown Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan.

The New York City Writers Conference from 1956 to the late 1960s brought literary giants to campus. Saul Bellow Robert Lowell Edward Albee Kay Boyle and Kenneth Koch were among the renowned instructors. This period added another layer to Wagner College’s rich tapestry. The conference also played a role in launching the careers of many notable playwrights.

Wagner College today is a vibrant institution. Its impressive array of buildings includes Cunard Hall Reynolds House Kairos House Main Hall and Parker Hall. These structures reflect different architectural styles and eras showcasing the college’s growth. Dormitories such as Guild Hall Parker Towers and Harbor View Hall accommodate a large portion of its undergraduate population. The Horrmann Library holds over 200000 volumes including the collection of the famous poet Edwin Markham.
