“We would not have any one of our brethren harbor a thought.” These words, spoken long ago, echo the spirit of Third NEI Baptist Missionary. This church stands as a testament to faith and community in South Philadelphia. Today we explore the rich history of this lighthouse.
Third NEI Baptist Missionary began with a desire for growth. In 1809, 30 members of the First Baptist Church sought dismissal to form a new church. They wanted to advance the Redeemer’s interest in South Philadelphia. Their first meetings were held in the home of Isaac Bacon. They held three services each Sunday.
The first pastor was the Rev. John P. Peckworth. In 1811, the church dedicated its building at Second and Catherine Streets. The church had 126 members at that time. Early furnishings were simple. They used plain board benches, sanded floors, and candles for light. A wood stove was hired for cold weather. During Pastor Peckworth’s ministry, 237 people were baptized in the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers.
In 1896, the church purchased property at Broad and Ritner Streets. A new building was erected and dedicated on Thanksgiving Day. In 1903, Rev. Groves Drew arrived. One hundred people confessed Christ as Savior in just five months.
However, tragedy struck on August 1, 1964. Fire completely destroyed the church building. The damage was over $400,000. The congregation met in various locations until the rebuilding began. The cornerstone ceremony took place on December 8, 1968. The dedication service for the rebuilt Third Baptist Church occurred on September 14, 1969.
A significant merger occurred in October 1993. Third Baptist Church and Open Door Baptist Church united. The newly formed congregation retained the name Third Baptist Church. The congregations declared “I Do!” accepting each other as fellow believers.
In 1998, the church underwent another change. The congregation approved renaming Third Baptist Church to Lighthouse Independent Baptist Church. This name reflects the church’s mission. It shines the light of Jesus Christ.
Today, Third NEI Baptist Missionary continues its mission. It stands as a beacon of faith in Philadelphia. It has more than 200 years of God-blessed existence.
