Established in 1874 Govan High School stands proudly. Its history is rich and full of stories. The school wasn’t always called Govan High though. That name only arrived on February 1st 1910. Imagine the students then. They walked different paths to reach this very spot.
Govan High moved to its present location in 1969. Mr Anthony Hepper Chairman of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders opened the new building. A significant moment for the school. It marked a new chapter in its long history. The building wasn’t perfect though. It needed some work. So in 2002 a refurbishment took place. Sir Alex Ferguson a former pupil reopened the improved school. What an honour for Govan High. This was a testament to the school’s enduring legacy.
The school has seen many changes over the years. It has evolved to meet the needs of its students. The number of pupils fluctuates. In 2021-22 there were 530 students. Spread across six school years from S1 to S6. The school isn’t just about academics. Govan High also includes a Language and Communication Resource. This facility supports students with autism. There’s also an Inclusion Base to help those with social and emotional needs.
Govan High’s facilities are impressive. Most teachers have their own classrooms. There are five computer suites. Specialized areas exist for Art Design Home Economics Science and Technical Education. Three gymnasia and a swimming pool are available for Physical Education. Nearby Pirie Park offers space for football hockey and athletics. The school library also includes an ICT suite.
Govan High isn’t just a school. It’s a community. Two primary schools Pirie Park and Riverside are closely linked. This connection extends the school’s impact on the local area.
