A grand estate on the edge of the forest. That’s Villa Mumm.

Before you stands Villa Mumm a palace-like building in Frankfurt am Main. Today it’s the home of the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy. But its story begins much earlier.

Built between 1902 and 1904 by champagne baron Hermann Mumm von Schwarzenstein and his wife Emma it was a symbol of their success. The Mumms were a powerful family. Their old home on the Zeil was too noisy for them. Too many streetcars. They traded it for this spacious 125000 square meter plot. This location offered peace and quiet. It was near Frankfurt’s Stadtwald forest. A fitting setting for their magnificent new villa.

The design is by Danish architect Aage von Kauffmann a family friend. He blended Renaissance Baroque and Classical styles. The result is a compact symmetrical building with three main floors. It’s known as the Little Opera. Why? It’s strikingly similar to Frankfurt’s Old Opera House. It also has six terraces designed for grand entertaining.

The Mumms lived here until 1926. The First World War changed everything. They lost their Champagne possessions. They could no longer afford the high property taxes. In 1938 Frankfurt bought the estate for the Wehrmacht. Military personnel moved in. They even built a bunker under the garden. It’s still there today.

The Villa Mumm survived the Second World War damaged but not destroyed. After the war the American military administration took over. Frankfurt almost became the German capital. Villa Mumm was meant to be the presidential residence. Bonn won instead. The building housed various agencies. In 1955 the Institute for Applied Geodesy moved in. It later became the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy.

In 1991 a major restoration took place. The original floor plans were carefully restored. The villa and park are now protected cultural monuments. Imagine the lavish parties. The elegant interiors. The Mumms’ opulent life. Villa Mumm still echoes with their legacy. Today you can visit this stunning piece of Frankfurt history. A testament to a family’s success and the city’s rich past.
