“Seen many concerts?” asks a voice from behind. Right here at 1510 Clarkson Street stands the Fillmore Auditorium. It is a Denver landmark with a rich history. It has hosted countless events since 1907.
The Fillmore Auditorium first opened as the Mammoth Roller Skating Rink. This was back in 1907. It quickly became a popular spot for students from East High School. Imagine this vast space filled with roller skaters gliding across the wooden floor. The rink closed in 1910.
The building then became home to the Fritchle Automobile & Battery Company. The company produced nearly 500 vehicles. Interestingly, Titanic survivor Molly Brown bought the very first car. The plant closed in 1917.
For years, the building served various purposes. It was a recreational center. It was also a warehouse. In 1968, it transformed into a live music venue called Mammoth Gardens. Big names like The Who and Jimi Hendrix graced its stage. City planning forced it to close in 1970.
The venue reopened briefly as a farmers market. Later, it became the Mammoth Events Center in 1985. It hosted a wide range of musical acts. These included Ozzy Osbourne, Cyndi Lauper, and the Beastie Boys.
In 1999, Bill Graham purchased the venue. He renovated it extensively. He then renamed it the Fillmore Auditorium Denver. The Fillmore Denver joined other music venues like the Ogden Theater.
The Fillmore Auditorium holds the title of Colorado’s largest indoor venue for general admission seating. It also has a unique dual Minors with Adults Liquor License. This allows music fans of all ages to enjoy shows together.
Inside, the Fillmore Auditorium boasts over 30000 square feet of space. The venue can accommodate up to 3700 guests. The acoustics and staging were improved in 1999. The Trey Anastasio Band played the opening show on May 19 1999.
Over the years, the Fillmore Auditorium has hosted numerous famous artists. These include Bob Dylan, Marilyn Manson and Foo Fighters. It even hosted a visit from President Barack Obama. The Fillmore continues to be a top music venue.
