Here, etched in simple gray plaster, stands a testament to resilience. This is the Auferstehungskirche. It rises modestly in Brandenburg an der Havel. This church embodies the spirit of rebirth after devastation.

The Auferstehungskirche serves the Auferstehungsgemeinde. It ministers to Görden and Hohenstücken neighborhoods. Its story is interwoven with the city’s post-war recovery. Imagine the Brandenburg of the 1950s. The city was still reeling from the Second World War. Amidst the rubble and hardship, hope flickered. The Auferstehungskirche emerged in 1955. It was one of the first new churches in the DDR after the war. It stands as a symbol of faith’s enduring power.

The Auferstehungskirche was built on the edge of Görden. Görden was a new district from the early 20th century. Later, in the 1970s, Hohenstücken grew. It was a Plattenbau area. The Auferstehungsgemeinde then became responsible for this area too.

Now, notice the church’s design. It is simple but dignified. A base of five layers of red brick supports the gray building. The main entrance faces west. A wooden canopy shelters it. The simple wooden door is two-winged. It is set within a double-layered opening. This creates a stepped portal effect on each side. Above the entrance, a long window is set high. All windows are segmentally arched and clear. Look to the sides of the main portal. Notice the three windows on each side. The roof ends in a triangular gable to the west.

The north and south sides mirror each other. You can see flat extensions like side aisles. They reach halfway up the church’s height. They extend one-third the length of the nave. Each has a pent roof. The north side has a side entrance and two windows. The south has an entrance and a window. The nave has six windows on each side. Two smaller ones sit above the extensions. Four larger ones are east of the extensions.

The eastern end mirrors the west. It has a triangular gable. An apse extends from the main structure. High windows punctuate its sides. The roof reflects the apse’s curve. Two single-story extensions flank the apse. They align with the nave and have hipped roofs. The southern extension houses the sacristy. A simple white cornice runs under all eaves.

Inside the Auferstehungskirche, you will find rooms for community work. They are behind the west portal. The church hall is accessed through a wood and glass door. Inside, the wooden seating is simple. A brick pulpit stands in the northeast. There is also a modest organ. The altar in the apse is brick. It is unplastered. A crucifix hangs above it. The wooden ceiling is unadorned. Six simple chandeliers hang here. A staircase with iron railings leads to a west gallery.

The Auferstehungskirche is more than bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to community. It represents hope and faith. Its doors are open. It is a sanctuary for all who seek solace. Take a moment to appreciate its simple beauty. Reflect on the stories held within its walls.
