Why did the Technische Hochschule Brandenburg choose an old military base for its campus? Let’s uncover the secrets behind those red brick walls. Technische Hochschule Brandenburg, or THB, isn’t your typical university. It stands on the grounds of a former 19th-century military complex. Imagine, back in 1874, a decree ordered the construction of new barracks in Brandenburg an der Havel. These were funded by French reparations from the Franco-Prussian War. Construction began in the summer of 1877, based on the design of the Potsdam Husar barracks. Four years later, the complex, spanning nine hectares, was ready. It housed stables for 742 horses, living quarters, kitchens, workshops, and even homes for officers’ families. The Technische Hochschule Brandenburg now occupies this historic site. The university was founded in 1992, making Brandenburg an der Havel a university town for the first time. Initially, just 62 students enrolled, studying mechanical engineering, business administration, and applied computer science. They were taught by a small team of five professors. While renovations were underway at the barracks, classes were held at the former Brennabor factory. By 1996, the main building was ready, and THB moved to its current location. Today, Technische Hochschule Brandenburg boasts three faculties: Computer Science and Media, Engineering, and Business. It has over 2,000 students and nearly 400 staff. The university has embraced modern technology, boasting a private 5G campus network. But the red brick whispers stories of its past. The buildings retain their historical charm, reminding students of the site’s military heritage. The main building, the library, and even the auditorium maximum have been carefully preserved. So, next time you see Technische Hochschule Brandenburg, remember it’s more than just a university. It’s a living testament to history, a blend of old and new, where the echoes of marching soldiers now mingle with the quiet hum of learning.
