Whispers carry on the wind, tales of a golden-tongued orator named John Chrysostom. Right here, in the heart of Athens, echoes of his youthful pursuits of knowledge still linger. The Church of Saint John Chrysostom, nestled in Nea Smyrni, commemorates this remarkable figure who walked these very streets centuries ago. John Chrysostom, born in Antioch in 347 AD, wasn’t destined for a religious life initially. His affluent family secured him a top-tier education, including studying law and rhetoric under the renowned Libanius. His sharp mind and even sharper wit gained him recognition early on. It is believed that he pursued secular studies right here in Athens, honing his skills in rhetoric and philosophy, shaping the powerful voice that would later become his trademark. However, something shifted within John. He felt a pull toward a different kind of knowledge, a spiritual yearning. At 20, he abandoned his worldly prospects, embracing baptism and the monastic life. He gave away his inheritance, turning his focus to the plight of the poor and downtrodden. His early monastic life was rigorous. He spent years as a hermit, immersing himself in prayer and study. But his frail health forced him to return to Antioch, where he was ordained a deacon in 381 and a priest five years later. Back in Antioch, John Chrysostom’s fiery sermons captivated the city. He held nothing back, challenging the wealthy for their extravagance and championing the cause of the needy. His powerful words, delivered with wit and conviction, earned him his nickname, “Golden-Mouthed”. In 398, John Chrysostom’s life took a dramatic turn. He was appointed Archbishop of Constantinople, a position he accepted reluctantly. His unwavering commitment to social justice and his bold criticisms of the rich and powerful created many enemies. In 403, he was falsely accused and exiled, eventually dying in 407 during his arduous journey to a more remote location of exile. Yet, even in exile, his words continued to inspire. Here, in Athens, at the Church of Agios Ioannis Chrysostom, we remember not only his intellectual prowess but also his unwavering dedication to serving the poor and speaking truth to power. The very stones seem to whisper his name, a testament to the lasting impact of a man who chose gold of a different kind.
