Standing here, consider the Dorfkirche Schmerzke a testament to time. This village church in Schmerzke, part of Brandenburg an der Havel, carries centuries within its walls. Until 1335, Dorfkirche Schmerzke belonged to the parish church of Brandenburg’s Neustadt. Afterward, it became a subsidiary church of Rietz.

The Dorfkirche Schmerzke is a simple yet striking structure. Its exterior reveals a single-nave design built with exposed brick and scattered fieldstones. Parts of the surrounding walls date back to the 15th century. They were integrated into the new building of 1714. Notice the three round-arched windows on each of the long sides. The chancel ends in three sides. Flat buttresses support the nave and the polygonal choir.

Look closely at the masonry. The medieval western part features large bricks laid in a regular pattern. The choir polygon, however, displays less meticulous work with smaller bricks. A simply profiled cornice tops the outer walls of the Dorfkirche Schmerzke. Above the north portal, spot a brick bearing the year 1714.

The roof structure likely dates back to 1714 as well. Around 1890, the west facade received a makeover in the Neo-Romanesque style. This included the addition of a square tower. It is topped with a pointed helmet.

Inside the Dorfkirche Schmerzke, a flat wooden beam ceiling from the 19th century spans the space. The church features a pulpit altar from the early 18th century. Figures of Christ and the four evangelists flank the pulpit. Twisted columns and acanthus carvings support the pulpit. It also boasts a crown-like sound cover.

The gallery and pews date from the second half of the 19th century. In the entrance area of Dorfkirche Schmerzke, you can see wall paintings from the 1950s.

Schmerzke itself has a history. The village is southeast of Brandenburg an der Havel’s center. Archaeological finds confirm human presence here since the Late Iron Age. In 2020, a Stone Age burial site was found here.

The first documented mention of Schmerzke was in 1267 as Smerceke. It belonged to the Bishop of Brandenburg then. By 1284, the Brandenburg Cathedral Chapter bought the village. The name Schmerzke comes from the old Polabian language. It means settlement near a spruce.

In 1624, twelve farmers and six cottagers lived here. After the Thirty Years’ War, only seven people remained. The village burned down completely in 1757 and 1775 but was rebuilt each time.

North of Schmerzke, the settlement of Neuschmerzke was built in 1925. From 1950 to 1952, Schmerzke was part of the urban district of Brandenburg. Since December 6, 1993, Schmerzke has again been part of Brandenburg an der Havel.

Take a moment to appreciate the Dorfkirche Schmerzke. It has stood through fires, wars, and changing times. Its walls echo with stories of faith and resilience. As you leave, remember the enduring spirit of this village church.
