Stepping into El Teatro del Barrio is like stepping into a time capsule. It takes you back to the electric atmosphere of 2011, to the heart of the 15-M movement. El Teatro del Barrio isn’t just a theater. It’s a living testament to the power of citizen participation and a cultural hub ignited by the very movement it reflects. Founded in December 2013, El Teatro del Barrio occupies the space of the former Sala Triángulo on Calle de Zurita. It was the brainchild of actor Alberto San Juan, along with economists Mario Sánchez and Gerardo Domínguez, and architects Paloma Domínguez and Iñaki Alonso. They envisioned a space where art and politics could intertwine, a platform where critical discussions could flourish, and where the community could actively participate in shaping cultural and political change. The theater’s very structure echoes this collaborative spirit. It operates as a non-profit cooperative, allowing anyone to become a member with a contribution of 100 euros. El Teatro del Barrio’s performances are anything but conventional. They tackle complex issues like economic power, corruption, the monarchy, and the political system, often with a sharp wit and critical lens. Imagine watching a play that dissects the role of banks and big corporations in society or one that satirizes political figures. This is the kind of thought-provoking, engaging theater you’ll find at El Teatro del Barrio. Beyond its main stage, the theater is home to the Universidad del Barrio, an initiative spearheaded by activists and researchers. This space delves into Spain’s recent history, highlighting citizen struggles and social movements. It’s a place where academics and activists meet, analyze power dynamics, and explore alternative citizen-led approaches to societal transformation. El Teatro del Barrio’s commitment to social change goes beyond the stage. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it transformed into a community hub, providing food and support to hundreds of families and homeless individuals in the Lavapiés neighborhood. This act of solidarity underscores the theater’s deep roots within the community and its dedication to social responsibility. In 2024, on its tenth anniversary, El Teatro del Barrio received the prestigious National Theatre Award. This recognition celebrated its innovative approach to performing arts and its unwavering commitment to social engagement. El Teatro del Barrio is more than just a theater. It’s a vibrant cultural center where art and activism converge, where critical thinking is encouraged, and where the community comes together to imagine and create a better future.
