Why is that charming little chapel called the “Crazy Chapel”? We are standing here before St. Jakob. It’s a delightful example of Gothic architecture. But its nickname and history hint at a rather peculiar journey. The St. Jakob chapel was originally part of a hospital complex dedicated to St. John. This hospital, likely established before 1350, was located just outside the Neustadt of Brandenburg an der Havel. Its location was rather strategic, sitting at the bridge crossing the Jakobsgraben and on the road leading to Magdeburg. Now, imagine this: in the 19th century, during a road widening project, the chapel stood in the way. Instead of demolishing this piece of history, the people of Brandenburg decided to move it! They physically relocated the entire chapel twelve meters from its original spot. Hence its endearing nickname, the “Crazy Chapel” or “Verrückte Kapelle” in German.
