Welcome to Ampang Hilir a district with a rich history. It began with tin mining in 1857. Raja Abdullah opened the Klang Valley for this purpose. Eighty-seven Chinese miners arrived. They walked from Kuala Lumpur to Ampang Hilir. They sought tin in this new area.
Sixty-nine miners died within a month. Malaria was rampant. Raja Abdullah sent one hundred fifty more men. The death rate decreased. Tin was first exported in 1859. Ampang Hilir’s tin success helped Kuala Lumpur grow. “Ampang” means “dam” in Malay. It refers to the miners’ dams.
Kuala Lumpur became Selangor’s capital in 1880. It became Malaysia’s capital in 1963. Ampang Hilir became part of Kuala Lumpur in 1974.
Let’s talk architecture. Pre-war buildings line Ampang Road. The Eng Choon Assembly Hall was built in 1930. Its structure was rebuilt to be taller. Eu Tong Sen built a villa in 1935. The National Art Gallery is towards downtown Kuala Lumpur. It features creative art. The Istana Budaya is next door. It is Malaysia’s cultural center.
Ampang Hilir was home to Ampang Park. It was Malaysia’s first shopping complex. It was demolished in 2018 for a metro line.
