It’s a living testament to a community’s resilience, built in 1928 amidst the rise of the Walzwerksiedlung, a new neighborhood for steelworkers. Designed by the renowned architect Otto Bartning, the Christuskirche reflects the “Neue Sachlichkeit” style. Its clean lines and white plastered walls, accented by a red brick base, speak of a modern age. This church was more than a place of worship. It was envisioned as a social hub, a beacon of hope in a burgeoning industrial landscape. Bartning, a key figure in the Bauhaus movement, incorporated a kindergarten and a nurse’s station into the design. He saw the church as a holistic center for the community, catering to both spiritual and social needs. The Christuskirche stands as a testament to this vision. Inside, the rectangular sanctuary, once holding 100 seats, is bathed in natural light from tall west-facing windows. A subtle detail, an ox-eye window near the altar on the northern wall, adds a unique touch. The northwest corner houses a modest tower, its lower third clad in the same red brick as the base, a visual echo of the church’s grounded nature. A chimney rises from the tower’s southwest corner, a functional element that also subtly points towards the heavens, marked by a cross at its peak. Even today, the Christuskirche continues its mission of community service. The “Regenbogen” kindergarten still operates within its walls. The church has undergone significant renovations, including new windows and heating, preserving its historical character while adapting to modern needs. The Christuskirche’s story is a powerful reminder that even amidst industrial progress, the human spirit seeks solace and connection. It is a place where the whispers of the past intertwine with the hopes of the future.
