“Diversity thrives here” a simple sentence embodies the Islamic Center of Southern California’s core value. Founded in 1952, the Islamic Center of Southern California stands as a beacon of faith. It is a cultural hub in the heart of Los Angeles. Initially, it occupied a rented property on Fountain Avenue. The center was the only mosque in Greater Los Angeles at that time.

As we stand here, consider the humble beginnings. A small community of Muslim families gathered. Many were foreign Muslims attending local universities. The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 changed everything. Immigration restrictions relaxed. The Muslim community grew. People came from South Bay and Orange County to attend the Islamic Center of Southern California.

In the early 1960s, the center moved to City Terrace. Later, in 1968, it moved again to Jefferson Park. Significant milestones occurred here. Juma prayer began here. Tafsir on the Quran was held. A weekend Islamic school program started. Formalized Islamic marriage services were established at the Islamic Center of Southern California.

Imagine the joy. The first Eid prayer took place at this mosque in 1969. The community continued to expand. In 1972, Dr. Sabri El-Ferra announced another move. The Islamic Center of Southern California needed a larger property closer to downtown. In the late 1970s, the center found its permanent home. This location on Vermont Avenue is where we stand today.

Not all its history has been peaceful. In the early 2000s, the mosque faced vandalism. Swastikas were drawn on the front. A rock was thrown through a window. These were classified as hate crimes. The community responded with resilience. Police increased security. Public and religious officials condemned the acts. Leaders from the Jewish community and Christian churches stood in solidarity. They spoke out against intolerance at the Islamic Center of Southern California.

The Islamic Center of Southern California actively engages in interfaith activities. In 2010, the Director of religious affairs attended Rosh Hashanah services. This fostered interfaith dialogue. During the controversy over the construction of a mosque in New York City, local religious leaders supported the Islamic Center of Southern California. Since 2001, the center hosts an Open Mosque day. Non-Muslims can tour the mosque. They can ask questions. This initiative promotes understanding and combats Islamophobia.

Beyond religious services, the Islamic Center of Southern California houses New Horizon School. It serves students from preschool to fifth grade. This is separate from the center’s Sunday School programming.

The Islamic Center of Southern California fosters an American Muslim identity. It commits to diversity and open-mindedness. It encourages civic engagement. It builds community. The center strives to practice and present Islam. It provides religious, educational, and social activities. These activities are for Muslims, interfaith partners, and anyone interested in learning about Islam. The Islamic Center of Southern California is more than a mosque. It’s a testament to faith. It is a vibrant center for community. It is a beacon of understanding.
