This iconic stadium is located on the lower campus of Boston College in Chestnut Hill Massachusetts. It’s just a short trip from downtown Boston.
Alumni Stadium first opened its gates on September 21 1957. The original stadium held 26000 spectators. A far cry from the impressive 44500 it holds today. The inaugural game was a clash against the U S Naval Academy a fitting start for this remarkable venue. This event was orchestrated by none other than then Senator John F Kennedy a Boston College benefactor. Kennedy’s presence highlights the stadium’s importance not just as a sports venue but also as a center for significant events. The stadium hosted Boston College’s annual Commencement Exercises for many years. Distinguished guests including heads of state religious leaders and cultural icons have graced its grounds.
The stadium wasn’t just home to the Boston College Eagles. In 1969 the Boston Patriots of the American Football League played a season here. Adding another layer to Alumni Stadium’s already rich tapestry.
Alumni Stadium has undergone several transformations over the years. In 1971 it was expanded to seat 32000. Artificial turf and lights were installed. Further renovations in 1988 and 1994 drastically altered the stadium’s design. The track was removed. The lower bowl was completely replaced creating a fully enclosed stadium. New upper decks were added at each end zone significantly increasing the seating capacity. The most recent upgrades included new scoreboards ribbon boards and lights installed before the 2024 season. These improvements ensure that Alumni Stadium remains a top-tier sporting facility. The stadium also features a unique winter practice facility a 65-foot inflatable vinyl bubble protecting the field from December to March.
Since its inception Alumni Stadium has witnessed countless memorable moments in Boston College football history. The stadium hosted BC’s first game as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference on September 17 2005. It’s been a stage for sellout crowds exceeding 44500.
