“Transform lives and neighborhoods through art.” That’s not just a motto. It is the driving force behind Live Coal Gallery.

Live Coal Gallery is located at 80 Clairmount Avenue in Detroit. It stands as a testament to the power of art. It is a vibrant hub where creativity meets community development.

The gallery’s story began with Yvette Rock. Rock is a Detroit resident and artist. She envisioned a space where art could be a catalyst for change. Live Coal Gallery opened its doors to fulfill this vision.

Live Coal Gallery focuses on education, visual arts, and community development. The gallery provides visual arts education to individuals, families, and groups. They achieve this through workshops and art camps. Online classes and artist residencies are also provided. These activities take place in various locations. These locations include schools, community centers, parks, and even a mobile art space.

Live Coal Arts Mobile is an 18-foot traveling gallery. It brings art and workshops directly to the community. It engages residents in areas like North End, Piety Hill, and Brightmoor. It also visits Southwest Detroit and Cody Rouge.

Live Coal exhibits and promotes art by artists of all ages. The gallery supports youth interested in developing professional skills. It also helps artists connect with the public through exhibitions and talks.

The Live Coal Collective is a select group of artists. They develop collaborative and community-based works. These works support the gallery’s mission. M. Saffell Gardner, a local artist, is a member of the Live Coal artists collective.

Live Coal addresses community needs through creative initiatives. They revitalize neighborhoods through nature-based programs and artistic installations. These efforts aim to improve the environment and promote safety.

Once, Live Coal Gallery had a space in Woodbridge. But, it transformed into Live Coal Arts Mobile for a while. Now, it has found a new home at Clairmount Studios.

Clairmount Studios is a project by Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corporation. It aims to help local artists and engage residents in the arts. Lisa Johanon hopes the studios will inspire young people. She wants them to find beauty and express themselves creatively.

The Red Children’s Art Museum is also located at Clairmount. It features art from Detroit-area youth. It also offers creative play space and weekly programming.

Live Coal Gallery also hosts events like book release parties and artist talks. The gallery features rotating exhibits. It also has a section dedicated to hand-blown glass by the late Detroit artist Larry Humphrey.

Visiting Live Coal Gallery means experiencing art. It means supporting a mission. It means witnessing the transformation of lives and neighborhoods. The gallery is currently open by appointment only. Email admin@livecoal.org to arrange a visit.
