The Weihbischof-Gnädiger-Haus is named after Weihbischof Dr. Karl Gnädiger. He was a long-serving chairman. This building stands as a testament to his commitment to Caritas.
Since 1996, this has been the central location for the Caritas Association of the Archdiocese of Freiburg. It is located in Freiburg-Lehen. Imagine all departments and staff units under one roof. This promotes collaboration. It makes it easier for the 160 employees to offer excellent advice, representation, and support to local Caritas efforts.
Freiburg is sometimes called the “capital of Caritas” in Germany. This is because four Caritas associations are based here. The Weihbischof-Gnädiger-Haus is home to the Caritas Association for the Archdiocese of Freiburg. It also houses the Caritas Association for the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald.
But that’s not all. In a recent expansion, the building gained a new five-story section. It provides additional office and conference space. It even includes a cafeteria with an outdoor terrace.
The expansion also welcomes IN VIA. IN VIA is the Catholic Association for Girls and Women’s Social Work in the Archdiocese of Freiburg. This gives them a central headquarters. Previously, their services were spread across different locations.
The new building mirrors the original in style. But it uses the latest technology for energy efficiency. The Weihbischof-Gnädiger-Haus uses groundwater for heating in winter. It uses groundwater for cooling in summer. The Caritas center operates without fossil fuels. This demonstrates a commitment to environmental sustainability.
Monsignor Bernhard Appel played a key role in the Caritas Association. He was the Deputy Diocesan Caritas Director. He then served as Diocesan Caritas Director.
