Step into the Galleria at Sunset. Feel the cool air conditioning a welcome change from the Nevada sun. This isn’t just any mall. This is Henderson’s first and only indoor mall a testament to the vision of developers like Leslie Dunn.
In 1986 Dunn presented the idea for this space to potential investors. He envisioned a vibrant shopping center. The Ranch Mall as it was initially called would become a reality. Construction however faced delays. The early 1990s recession hampered progress. Finally in 1995 construction started. It spurred a boom in the area. Sunset Station casino opened across the street.
The Galleria at Sunset opened its doors on February 28 1996. Twelve thousand to fifteen thousand people attended the grand opening. Disney characters entertained the crowds. This was a huge event for Henderson. It marked a significant moment in the town’s history.
The mall originally featured a Southwestern theme. Skylights illuminated the interior. Frommer’s guide even called it the most aesthetically pleasing mall in the Las Vegas Valley. The food court was a highlight. It seated 600 with quirky chess-piece topiaries. Twelve eateries including Cinnabon and Dairy Queen offered delicious choices.
Over the years the Galleria at Sunset has seen changes. Mervyn’s closed becoming a Kohl’s. A major renovation in 2013 modernized the space. An expansion added new restaurants like Bravo Cucina Italiana. Palm trees and fountains made way for more shopping space. Today the Galleria at Sunset boasts over 130 stores. It remains a vital part of Henderson’s community.
More than just a shopping destination the Galleria is a gathering place. It has a branch of the Henderson Library. The Henderson Police Department has a community relations office here. The Galleria at Sunset has adapted to the times. It continues to thrive as a beloved landmark.
