Established in 1957 Beis Yaakov High School stands before you. It’s a significant landmark for the Haredi Jewish community. This school isn’t just a building it’s a cornerstone of faith and learning. Originally a private school Beis Yaakov transitioned to a state-funded voluntary aided school in 2005. Then in 2012 it embraced academy status.

The school’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Ofsted inspections in 2014 and 2022 resulted in ‘Inadequate’ ratings. These inspections sparked controversy. The school leaders disputed the 2014 inspection’s methods. They claimed that inspectors’ questions about homosexuality and interfaith relations had distressed the students. A 2019 inspection deemed the school ‘Requires Improvement’ partly because of the lack of teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity. This led to a local dayan distributing leaflets condemning homosexuality. The 2022 Ofsted report was stark. It criticized a deeply entrenched culture of apathy among staff.

Despite these setbacks Beis Yaakov perseveres. A monitoring inspection in July 2023 noted progress. However the school remained in special measures due to persistent inadequacies. Beis Yaakov High School continues to serve the Haredi community in Salford Bury and Manchester. Its story reflects both the successes and the struggles of a dedicated institution. It serves as a testament to the enduring commitment to education within a specific cultural context. The school’s location on Broom Lane in Salford is a significant hub for the community it serves. Its continued existence signifies a dedication to preserving its identity and educational mission. The building you see today is a product of a rich history and ongoing evolution.
