From humble beginnings in a tent to a grand edifice. That’s the story of Second Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church East. It all started in September 1924. Twenty-four believers joined Reverend Father Hill. They formed New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Later they renamed it honoring their first pastor.
Second Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church East isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith and resilience. Imagine the dedication of those early members. They met in a tent then a Cadillac Motor Company building. Next a storefront on Tillman near Kirby. Through hard work and unwavering belief. They built their first church on Williams and Kirby streets.
The construction of the Edsel Ford Freeway brought challenges. The church had to relocate again. This time to the First Church of the Nazarene site. This move demonstrates incredible determination. The congregation’s faith never wavered. They raised funds for the purchase.
Then came the move to its present location. The groundbreaking ceremony marked a significant milestone. The new church opened its doors on the first Sunday of October 1967. This wasn’t the end of their expansion. A second unit with a gym and classrooms was added in 1973.
Second Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church East has always been more than a place of worship. It’s a community hub. It’s a place where people find solace and support. Several pastors have led Second Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church East. Reverend W C McNeal and Reverend R C Elsley served as co-pastors. Reverend W S McGahee followed. Then Reverend Willis Dunn Reverend C Milton Newton and Reverend J O Truitt. Reverend Roy A Allen Sr. served a long tenure. He retired in 1995. Reverend Dr R LaMont Smith II succeeded him. Each leader contributed to the church’s growth and spiritual strength.
The church burned its mortgage twice. Once in 1961 and again in 1983. This signifies their financial stability and community support. They’ve also supported local shelters and children’s centers. This demonstrates their ongoing commitment to serving Detroit.
