Today, we’re at the Liede Bridge in Guangzhou. This bridge is more than just a way to cross the Pearl River. It’s a landmark.
The Liede Bridge opened in July 2009. It quickly became a vital part of Guangzhou’s infrastructure. The bridge spans 4.3 kilometers. It links Pazhou Island in Haizhu District with Tianhe District.
Did you know that French President Emmanuel Macron admired the Liede Bridge? After visiting China, he shared a video of its dazzling light show. He expressed his admiration for Guangzhou in both Chinese and French. The video became very popular online.
The Liede Bridge connects several important districts. These are Tianhe, Haizhu, and Panyu. It links landmarks such as the Tianhe Sports Center, Zhujiang New Town, and the Canton Tower. It serves as a key route into Guangzhou’s central business district. It’s the first cable-stayed bridge in the city. The north end connects to Liede Road. The south end intersects with Xingang East Road.
The tower of the Liede Bridge is quite tall. It stands at 128 meters. The main structure rises to 103 meters. The tower’s outer appearance is unique. It features two shell-shaped curved shells interlocking.
Building the Liede Bridge wasn’t easy. The project team faced three major technical challenges. The tower’s construction was a key focal point. It demanded remarkable engineering feats. The precision needed in the design and fabrication of the main tower formwork was exceptionally high. The formwork was not reusable. This resulted in significant costs.
Constructing the wide steel girders presented another challenge. They required careful control during the pushing process. The project team worked with research institutions. They ensured effective control of tension and local pressure. This guaranteed the overall stability of construction.
Installing the three-dimensional self-anchored cable-stayed system was also tricky. The high tower supports two long steel cable stays. These branch into 28 steel ropes. These ropes grip steel box girders on the bridge deck. This transfers pressure to the tower and bridge ends. It supports the entire structure.
The Liede Bridge team made independent research and innovation. This resulted in patents. They earned the “Four New” Achievement Certificate.
The Liede Bridge contrasts with the Canton Tower. They complement each other from a distance. The bridge is called the “Pearl of the Pearl River”. Its shell-shaped tower and curved cable stays give it a sense of fluidity.
Together with other marine-inspired buildings the Liede Bridge enhances the waterfront environment. The Liede Bridge is especially stunning at night. Visitors can enjoy the changing colors and projections inspired by Chinese culture. You can even walk across the bridge to appreciate its beauty and enjoy views of the Pearl River. Taking the Guangzhou tram to the Liede Bridge station is also a great way to see it. From here, you have a great view of the Canton Tower.
The Liede Bridge stands as a testament to engineering. It is a shining landmark in Guangzhou. Its beauty and importance continue to impress all who see it. Take a moment to appreciate the blend of design and culture that defines this bridge.
