Within Haengju-dong’s embrace stands Haengjusanseong Fortress a testament to unwavering courage. This isn’t just any fortress. It’s the heart of a legendary battle. A battle that echoes through history. Here in Haengju-dong during the Imjin War in 1593 soldiers and women defended this very ground. They stood against an overwhelming 30000-strong Japanese army. General Kwon Yul led the defense. They triumphed against all odds.

Haengjusanseong Fortress has witnessed centuries of history. It may have existed since the Three Kingdoms period. Its strategic location on a broad plain surrounded by steep cliffs is consistent with fortress designs of that era. It’s about one kilometer long resembling a Temoe-style stone fortress.

Imagine the scene. The air filled with the scent of gunpowder. The roar of cannons. The clash of steel. The determined faces of the defenders. Women played a crucial role. They carried rocks in their aprons. This is the origin of the famous Haengju apron. This story represents the spirit of the people uniting to repel the invaders. Although some dispute the women’s direct participation in combat the story’s enduring legacy highlights the unity of the community.

At the fortress you’ll find Daecheopmun Gate. This marks the start of the journey through history. You’ll see General Kwon Yul’s statue. Reliefs depict the valiant resistance. Government forces soldier monks righteous armies and women all fought side by side. Take a moment to reflect on their sacrifices. Near the fortress is the Chungjangsa Shrine. This shrine houses General Kwon Yul’s portrait. Every year on March 14 a ritual commemorates the Battle of Haengju.

A short walk away is the Memorial Hall for the Battle of Haengju. You’ll find weapons from that era. See sinjijeon the secret weapon that contributed to the Joseon victory. Paintings depicting the Battle of Haengju the Battle of Ichi and the Battle of Doksanseong Fortress bring the fierce battles to life. Further up you’ll find a monument to the Battle of Haengju. Enjoy a panoramic view of the Hangang River. Feel the echo of the victory. Events like Haengjusanseong Sunrise and the Battle of Haengju Festival honor those who gave their lives here.
