Carteret Park

Carteret Park. A simple name for a place that holds so much history. Did you know Carteret, New Jersey, was once known as Roosevelt? It was incorporated in 1906 and named after President Theodore Roosevelt. However, the name was later changed in 1922 to honor Sir George Carteret and his son Philip. Sir George was one of New Jersey’s first proprietors and Philip was its first royal governor. Carteret Park itself represents the enduring legacy of these influential figures. The park reflects the growth and transformation that Carteret has experienced over the decades. Joseph Medwick, a Baseball Hall of Famer, grew up in Carteret. He played left field for the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1930s. There’s even a park named after him in Carteret, bordering the Rahway River. This river forms the northern boundary of Carteret, separating it from Linden in Union County. The Arthur Kill, on the other hand, forms the eastern boundary, with Staten Island just across the water. Carteret sits nestled within Middlesex County. It has seen its population boom over the years, reaching its highest ever recorded number in the 2020 census. The town even has its own motto: “The Center of it All”.
