Can you imagine a village where medieval history intertwines with modern life? This is Leitershofen, a charming village nestled within the city of Stadtbergen, just a stone’s throw from Augsburg. Leitershofen’s story begins long ago, in the heart of medieval Bavaria. It was once a prized possession, partially owned by prominent Augsburg families like the Hofmaiers, Peutingers, Langenmantels, Rehlingers, and Welsers. These families weren’t just wealthy; they were influential players in Augsburg’s vibrant social and political scene. In 1523, Bartholomäus VI. Welser acquired Leitershofen’s “Obere Schloss,” or Upper Castle. The Welser family’s legacy is even etched into Leitershofen’s history. Their coat of arms was adopted as the village’s emblem, a symbol of their deep connection to this place. Leitershofen wasn’t just shaped by wealthy families. The Fugger-Babenhausen family held the “Grundherrschaft,” meaning they controlled the land and its resources. The Margraviate of Burgau presided over the high court, dispensing justice according to the laws of the time. The Bishopric of Augsburg held the right to appoint the local parish priest, a testament to the Church’s influence in everyday life. This intricate web of power dynamics shaped Leitershofen’s destiny for centuries. Then came the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss, a pivotal moment in German history. This decree reshuffled the political map, transferring Leitershofen to the Electorate of Bavaria. Later, on May 1, 1978, Leitershofen became part of Stadtbergen, a transition that marked a new chapter in its long history. Leitershofen is more than just its past. Today, Leitershofen is a blend of old and new. It boasts two significant churches: the historic St. Oswald Church, a baroque masterpiece rebuilt in 1732 by Johann Georg Fischer, and the modern Church of the Risen Lord. This newer church, designed by architect Adolf Zach and consecrated in 1970, underwent a beautiful interior renovation in 2020. The village is also home to the Diocese’s retreat house, a place of quiet contemplation, featuring the serene St. Paul’s Chapel. Leitershofen even houses the International Institute for Empirical Social Economics, a sign of its intellectual vitality. As you stand here, in the heart of Leitershofen, take a moment to soak in the atmosphere. Feel the weight of history beneath your feet. Imagine the echoes of the past whispering through the streets. Leitershofen is a testament to the enduring power of community. A place where the stories of the past continue to shape the present.
