Frédéric Combemale was born in Poussan in 1860. He died in Lille in 1938. Combemale’s journey in medicine began with brilliance. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier in 1881. He became a Doctor of Medicine in 1888.

In 1889, Combemale’s career led him to Lille. He became a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lille in 1893. From 1901 to 1919, he served as the dean of the faculty.

Combemale’s influence extended beyond academia. In 1896, he became the head of the Medical Clinic at the Charité Hospital. He held this position until 1930. His work at the Charité Hospital was revolutionary. He created a structured learning environment for his students. He emphasized bedside teaching. He supplemented this with lectures and external consultations.

Combemale founded l’Écho médical du Nord in 1897. He served as its director and editor-in-chief. In 1907, Combemale co-founded the Psychiatric Clinic of Esquermes with Georges Raviart. This clinic was affiliated with the University of Lille.

Beyond his clinical and academic roles, Combemale was involved in public health. He was an administrator of Lille hospitals from 1901. He was an administrator of hospices from 1905. Combemale was president of the League of the North against Tuberculosis. He also led the Departmental Council of Hygiene of the North. Plus, he headed the Commission of the Asylum of Aliens of Bailleul.

His dedication earned him the Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1920. He was a member of numerous societies. These included the Society of Sciences of Lille and the Society of Medicine of the North.

Rue Frédéric Combemale serves as a reminder of his contributions. Frédéric Combemale dedicated his life to medicine and the well-being of others.
