The scent of sandalwood hangs heavy in the air. This is Nozaki Kannon also known as Jigenji Temple.

For centuries Nozaki Kannon has stood serene overlooking Osaka. It’s a Zen temple of the Soto sect. Its principal image is the Eleven-faced Kanzeon Bodhisattva. This magnificent statue carved from a single piece of sandalwood is about 130cm tall. It rests on a pedestal encircled by a dragon.

Legend says the temple was founded by Gyoki Bosatsu. People of Osaka have worshipped here since ancient times. Nozaki Kannon’s fame spread nationwide. This happened thanks to Rintaro Tokai’s popular song “Nozaki Kouta”. The temple’s gate remains open welcoming all visitors. From this vantage point you can admire a panoramic view of Osaka.

Imagine Joruri performances held here. Picture kabuki actors gracing its grounds. Hear the witty tales of rakugo artists. This temple has served as a stage for many traditional arts. The temple offers a peaceful escape. It’s a place of tranquility amidst the city’s bustle.

Today you can still practice zazen meditation. You can copy sutras here. Nozaki Kannon continues its long tradition of spiritual practice and cultural significance. It stands as a testament to Osaka’s enduring history. A place where past and present intertwine. A place where the city’s spirit thrives.

The temple offers more than just spiritual solace. It provides a fascinating glimpse into Osaka’s rich cultural heritage. A reminder of its artistic past. A connection to its people’s enduring faith. A serene place. A peaceful sanctuary. Nozaki Kannon.
