“Salvaged, discarded objects given new life.” That’s the essence of the Trade Deficit Artwork. We’re standing here along Broadway in Denver, near Blake Street. Look around at these vibrant sculptures. They’re more than just metal.
The Trade Deficit Artwork consists of three sculptures. They stretch along Broadway from Blake Street to Lawrence Street. The sculptures mark a gateway. This gateway connects the industrial River North neighborhood (RiNo) to downtown Denver. They also activate the route from the airport.
These sculptures are the creation of artist Joseph Riché. He lived and worked right here in RiNo. Riché chose metal shipping containers for his trio of sculptures. These containers were common in the RiNo area.
Installed in September 2009, the Trade Deficit Artwork symbolizes RiNo’s history and future. The colorful, bold artworks represent Denver’s global connections through commerce and culture. They show how Denver is connected to the rest of the world.
