Why did the Duke of Brunswick leave his fortune to Geneva? The Brunswick Monument whispers the answer. This extravagant mausoleum in the Jardin des Alpes is more than just a tomb. It’s a testament to a peculiar pact between a displaced duke and the city of Geneva. Charles II, Duke of Brunswick, a man of eccentricities, was exiled from his German duchy in 1830. He found refuge in Geneva, a city he eventually grew to love. Upon his death in 1873, he bequeathed his vast fortune to Geneva. But there was a catch. His will stipulated a lavish funeral and the construction of a monument worthy of his name, a replica of the Scaliger Tombs in Verona. The city, after some debate, honored his request. The Brunswick Monument, a neo-Gothic marvel, was designed by Swiss architect Jean Franel. It was completed in 1879. The monument stands on a large platform, guarded by marble chimeras and lions. These figures add a touch of mystique to the already dramatic structure. The monument’s three stories of white marble are adorned with statues of the duke’s ancestors. Originally, an equestrian statue of Duke William crowned the spire. However, earthquake damage led to its removal to a separate plinth. The spire was later rebuilt, topped with a crown instead. The Monument Brunswick cost two million Swiss Francs, a fraction of the duke’s twenty-four-million-franc fortune. The remaining funds contributed to the development of Geneva. The Grand Théâtre, for instance, owes its existence to the duke’s legacy. So, the next time you admire the Brunswick Monument, remember the exiled duke. He found a final resting place and a unique way to leave his mark on Geneva.
