In its early years Seoul Munchang Elementary School underwent several transformations. It started as a branch school in Siheung County. It became Sindaebang Public Elementary School on February 11 1946. A month later the school was renamed Munchang Public Elementary School. This happened on March 31 1946.
The school became part of Seoul City on August 14 1949. Student numbers decreased in 1982. This was due to the opening of Seoul Yeongnim Public Elementary School. Student numbers decreased again in 1985. This was due to the opening of Seoul Nambu Public Elementary School.
The name changed again on March 1 1996. It became Seoul Munchang Elementary School. The school building was rebuilt on May 11 2005.
Seoul Munchang Elementary School was designated as an autonomous school. This happened on January 28 2010. It became a creative model school on March 1 2011. Seoul City Office of Education designated it as a preliminary innovation school. This happened on August 1 2011.
The school has strived for excellence. It was recognized for its curriculum management in 2011. Parent participation was also recognized. In 2012 a kindergarten and auditorium were newly built. In 2013 classrooms were modernized. The Multipurpose Room was completed that year too. Exterior painting and soundproofing were added.
In 2015 the school continued to improve. A Cosway creation project was undertaken. The broadcasting room was modernized. Waterproofing and thermal insulation work was completed. The school gate was expanded too.
Seoul Munchang Elementary School was recognized as an excellent school. It focused on multicultural education in 2015. It was re-designated as a Seoul-type Innovation School. This covered four years from 2016 to 2019. It was designated as a multicultural preliminary school in 2017.
The school has continued to evolve. Ecological education was promoted. An ecological pond was created in 2018. School arts and culture education was also promoted. Educational donations became more active. The kindergarten received an award for educational activities in 2019.
