Did you know that the Parroquia de San Andrés Apóstol in Madrid has a history stretching back to the late twelfth century? Its location holds secrets whispered through centuries. The current church stands on the site of an earlier Christian church. This church existed during the Islamic rule of Madrid. This makes the Parroquia de San Andrés Apóstol one of the oldest parishes in the city. Legend says it was frequented by Saint Isidore the Laborer. He and Saint Mary of the Head were parishioners. Saint Isidore was buried in this very parish. His master Ivan de Vargas lived nearby. The Marquis of Paredes’ palace later stood on that site. Now reconstructed it is a municipal museum. The well where one of Saint Isidore’s miracles occurred was there too. A small chapel marked the spot where the saint supposedly lived. The original church underwent various renovations. One notable change was during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. It involved a Gothic-style renovation. A high passageway was also added connecting it to the palace. The church also suffered a collapse in 1656. The collapse led to a modest reconstruction. Simultaneously a chapel dedicated to Saint Isidore was built. This building project notably changed the church’s orientation. The rebuilt church was adorned with an altarpiece by Alonso Cano. Unfortunately the initial plan to include Saint Isidore’s urn was simplified. Sculptures were created by Manuel Pereira. His stone statue of Saint Andrew stood in the niche of the single door. Sadly only fragments remain in the garden today. The tragic fire of 1936 during the Spanish Civil War destroyed the church. Only the exterior survived the fire. The rectory now occupies the site of the original Gothic apse. Today’s church uses what was once Saint Isidore’s Chapel and a section of the seventeenth-century reconstruction. The present structure is a testament to the resilience of faith and the determined efforts of restoration. Its history is a compelling narrative of destruction and renewal reflecting the spirit of Madrid itself. The Parroquia de San Andrés Apóstol stands as a silent yet powerful witness to the city’s rich past. Step inside and feel the echoes of prayers and stories passed down through generations.
