Qalandya Mosque sits within a village known by the same name, nestled between Jerusalem and Ramallah. The village of Qalandya itself is a small, beautiful place, bordered by dense fir forests and patches of olive groves. It feels a world away from the bustling checkpoint nearby.
Qalandya Mosque’s beauty is striking. Its two attractive towers draw the eye, hinting at the rich history within. Qalandiya’s historical roots run deep, with Crusaders referencing the town by its current name in the Middle Ages. The surrounding area has a long and complex history, even beyond the mosque itself. The total area of Qalandiya is a substantial 3940 dunums, with 70 dunums comprising the built-up area. As of 2006, the village housed a population of 1,154. Nearby lies the Qalandia refugee camp, established in 1949, primarily for Palestinian refugees from Jerusalem.

This older mosque has been largely deserted since the construction of a newer mosque with a minaret to its east. A yet newer mosque, Qalandya Mosque, now graces the eastern side of the town with its twin minarets.
