Ever wondered about a church born from a lotus tank? That is the story of Wesley Church. It stands here in Egmore Chennai. Wesley Church is one of the oldest churches in this area.

Originally built in 1903 by the Wesleyan Mission, it meets the growing spiritual needs around Egmore. The church proudly bears the name of John Wesley. He is the founder of the Methodist Movement across 140 countries.

Before Wesley Church stood tall, this very site was a lotus tank. Rev. John Breedan purchased the land in 1892. He drained the tank to pave the way for the church. The foundation was laid on December 28 1903. Professor George G Findlay and fellow missionaries did the honors. Finally, on February 11 1905, Rev J Cooling inaugurated the church. Rev William H Findlay delivered the opening message.

Notice the Gothic architecture. It defines Wesley Church. The exterior showcases brickwork. Stained glass windows add color. A tiled brick spire reaches towards the sky.

Inside Wesley Church, the altar holds Methodist images. A prayer hall welcomes devotees. Plaques of Wesley and Jesus Christ stand in glass chambers. They face the devotees. The church also houses a school. Other institutions are also within the compound.

The pipe organ here is special. It is one of the oldest instruments still in use.

Wesley Church follows the Protestant sect of Christianity. It is an active church. Hourly prayers and daily services are common.

Initially, only English priests served here. Today, Tamil priests are also part of the service. Wesley Church is under the Diocese of Madras of the Church of South India.

Mass takes place from Monday to Friday. It starts at 8 a.m., continues at 8:30 a.m., and concludes at 5 p.m. On Saturdays, mass is at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sundays also have masses at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Christmas is a grand celebration. The festivities last for eight days. It begins with flag hoisting on December 24. The celebration ends with a feast and religious lectures on January 2.

Wesley Church runs a home for the mentally challenged. It is named Parivalaya. Annual festivals are celebrated with the institution.

The Harvest festival is a significant event here. It is celebrated every November as a day of thanksgiving. Rice, cereal, vegetables, and oil are donated to the socially backward. This act reflects gratitude to society. The festival aligns with the Old Testament.

Wesley Church celebrated its centenary on January 29 2005. Special lectures and fundraising events marked the occasion.
