Osaka Prefecture Imamiya Higher School a name that echoes through time. Established in 1906 it began as Osaka Prefecture Imamiya Middle School. This was the fourth middle school established in Osaka City. The school’s name a testament to its history. It used the character 中 (chu) for middle and added 今 (ima) for present and 宮 (miya) for palace. The four characters on either side indicated that it was the fourth middle school.
Its early years saw the school relocated. First to Minami-ku Imamiya-cho in 1906 then in 1908 to its current location in Naniwa-ku. A steel-frame building was constructed in 1933. Its pillars and hallways featured striking Art Deco lines.
The school’s history wasn’t without challenges. World War II brought disruption. Air raids damaged the school. Parts of the building were even used as a military facility. The post-war period was difficult. The school suffered typhoon damage in 1945 and parts of the building were lent to a neighboring school. After the war the school was temporarily occupied by the GHQ. It was finally returned in 1951.
In 1948 the Japanese education system changed. Osaka Prefecture Imamiya Higher School was born. The school was initially a combined day and evening school. It later transitioned to a day school. A significant shift occurred in 1996. The school changed from a general studies program to a comprehensive high school. In 1998 it fully embraced a day-only schedule.
The school’s evolution didn’t stop there. In 2011 it moved to a three-year system. The school emphasized both individual development and knowledge acquisition. This was reflected in its curriculum. Students could choose from various subjects including medical science and aerospace engineering. They also benefit from partnerships with universities.
Today Osaka Prefecture Imamiya Higher School continues to thrive. It maintains a strong focus on student support and extracurricular activities. Its club activities are a notable aspect of school life. The school also created a special classroom for students with learning disabilities in 2020. Many successful people graduated from Osaka Prefecture Imamiya Higher School. They have made significant contributions to various fields.
