Whispers of history linger here. This is the site of the Monasterio de la Concepcion Jeronima. Imagine its grandeur.

Founded in 1509 by Beatriz Galindo “La Latina” this convent held a significant place in Madrid’s history. La Latina was a remarkable woman. She served as the lady-in-waiting to Queen Isabella I. She chose this location near the Plaza de la Cebada. The building stood adjacent to the Hospital de la Latina. It was designed by the remarkable Hispano-Muslim architect Maese Hazan.

The Monasterio de la Concepcion Jeronima wasn’t without its challenges. Disputes arose with the Franciscan order of the Iglesia de San Francisco el Grande. They claimed the land rightfully belonged to them. The Franciscans won the ensuing legal battles. The convent was transformed into the Convento de la Concepcion Francisca. The Jeronima nuns relocated to another site higher up on the same street. This was a property belonging to the Ramirez family.

Despite these setbacks La Latina’s wishes for the burial of herself and her husband were not fully realized. Her husband Francisco Ramirez “El Artillero” died in 1501. He was buried in an unmarked location within the church. This made fulfilling La Latina’s desire for a shared tomb impossible.

For nearly four centuries the Monasterio de la Concepcion Jeronima stood. But in 1890 it was demolished. The street that now bears its name serves as a poignant reminder of its existence. The Monasterio de la Concepcion Jeronima’s story is one of resilience. It is a story of a powerful woman’s vision and the enduring legacy of a place. Though the buildings are gone the memory remains. The legacy of the Monasterio de la Concepcion Jeronima echoes through the streets of Madrid. It reminds us of the strength and determination of the women who called it home.
