“Lost souls wander the six realms,” a monk whispered centuries ago. He sparked the tradition of the Rokudō Chinōji, the Six Jizō Statues. These statues stand watch at Kyoto’s ancient crossroads. They offer protection at the 交通安全大地蔵菩薩, the Traffic Safety Jizō Bosatsu. Today, we stand before this very guardian. It embodies the hope for safe passage. The Rokudō Chinōji temples originated with the scholar, Ennin, in 852. He placed six Jizō statues at Daishōji Temple. This site is near the present-day Rokudō Station. Ennin envisioned these figures as guides through the afterlife’s trials. These six realms—hell, hungry ghosts, animals, asuras, humans, and heavens—represented the cycle of suffering and rebirth. Centuries later, during Emperor Go-Shirakawa’s reign, a plague swept Kyoto. The emperor, seeking divine intervention, commissioned six hexagonal halls at the city’s entrances. These halls housed the Rokudō Chinōji statues, reinforcing their role as protectors against misfortune. The 交通安全大地蔵菩薩, our focus today, reflects this legacy. The six-armed Jizō here is unique in Japan. It’s a powerful symbol of protection in this bustling urban landscape. Each arm extends, holding a wish for safe travels in this world and the next. The six statues, spread across Kyoto, offer a spiritual journey for those who seek them. They link us to a time when ancient roads were treacherous. Today, even with modern transportation, the journey continues. The Rokudō Chinōji remind us to be mindful. They remind us to seek protection for ourselves and others on every road we travel.
