A century and a half of whispered prayers echoes within these walls. Welcome to the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Hope. More commonly known as the Mission Church this magnificent structure stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Boston’s immigrant communities.

Built in 1878 the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Hope wasn’t always a grand basilica. It started as a humble wooden church in 1870. The Redemptorists priests arrived in Boston in 1869. They established this mission house to serve a growing population. Many were German and Irish immigrants seeking solace and community. This modest structure became a beacon of hope. It served as a spiritual anchor for those far from home.

The current Romanesque Revival masterpiece of Roxbury puddingstone stands tall. It is a true reflection of the faith that built it. The stunning stained glass windows transport you to another realm. Franz Mayer and Co from Munich Germany crafted the shrine’s windows. The detail is exquisite. F X Zettler crafted the nave’s windows. Their artistry is a marvel to behold.

The towers added in 1910 reach towards the heavens. They are a tribute to the enduring faith of the community. Swiss architect Franz Joseph Untersee designed them. They are a testament to the church’s continued growth. The western tower houses twelve bells. Their peals resonate through Mission Hill. This perfect proportion of 215 feet in length and height is awe-inspiring.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Hope is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a living shrine. A replica of the iconic Our Lady of Perpetual Help resides here. It has been a source of comfort and healing for generations. Reported cures attributed to her intercession draw pilgrims to this special place. The practice of blessing the sick started in 1874. It continues to this day. Crutches and other votives left behind by grateful individuals are a poignant reminder of answered prayers.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Hope isn’t just a symbol of faith. It’s a vibrant hub of community life. Mission Grammar School opened in 1889. Mission Church High School followed in 1926. Senator Edward Kennedy found solace here. He often prayed in the church. His funeral took place within these hallowed halls. The church’s proximity to Boston’s hospitals underscores its role as a refuge for the sick and their loved ones. Today this beloved basilica continues to serve a diverse community. It stands as a powerful symbol of hope in the heart of Mission Hill. Its story unfolds with each prayer each Mass and each life it touches.
