Amidst the vibrant tapestry of the Bronx, lies a little haven known as Murphy Triangle. This seemingly unassuming patch of green holds a story waiting to be unearthed. Murphy Triangle, a space framed by Crescent Avenue, 183rd Street, Adams Place, and Arthur Avenue, isn’t just a triangle; it’s a tribute. It was christened in 1918 to honor two local heroes, John D’Auria and Henry Murphy. These young men made the ultimate sacrifice during the tumultuous years of World War I. Murphy Triangle is more than just a memorial. It’s a living testament to the community’s resilience and remembrance. At its heart stands a majestic marble bust of Christopher Columbus, crafted around 1926 by the renowned Bronx sculptor, Attilio Piccirilli. Interestingly, this iconic bust wasn’t always here. It originally graced the front of P.S. 45 on Bathgate Avenue and Lorillard Place before finding its new home in Murphy Triangle in 1992. Just across Arthur Avenue, to the west, stands the imposing St. Barnabas Hospital, now SBH Health System. The hospital’s history is intertwined with the local lore. The land was once part of the estate of Jacob Lorillard, a prominent figure in the 1800s. His descendants bequeathed the land in 1874 to the Home for Incurables. Jacob’s mansion even served as the doctors’ residence until its demolition in 1932. The Home for Incurables later transformed into St. Barnabas Hospital in 1947, continuing its legacy of healing and care. Murphy Triangle also serves as a gateway to the bustling commercial heart of Arthur Avenue. Across Crescent Avenue, the inviting Prince Coffee Shop beckons with its sidewalk café. Shaded by mature trees, it offers a tranquil respite before one plunges into the vibrant energy of Arthur Avenue. Murphy Triangle is more than just a park; it’s a microcosm of the Bronx’s rich history and enduring spirit.
