Let’s explore the importance of this institution. The University of Porto preserves its legacy in both modern and historic buildings. These buildings blend seamlessly into the city. Some buildings have witnessed almost 250 years of history.
The Historic Building of the University is one such place. You can find it in Gomes Teixeira Square or Lion’s Square. This “mother-house” of the University has a rich past. It was built on the site of the Boarding School for Orphan Boys and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça. This dates back to the 17th century.
Later, it housed the Royal Marine and Commerce Academy. Then it became the Polytechnic Academy of Porto. These were predecessors of the University of Porto.
The University was officially established in 1911. After this the building housed the Rectory and the Faculty of Sciences. This lasted from 1911 to 2006. It also housed the Technical Faculty from 1915 to 1937. The first Faculty of Arts and Humanities was here from 1919. The Faculty of Economics was also here from 1953 to 1974.
A fire in 1974 damaged part of the building. The Rectory services moved to Rua D. Manuel II. These were former CICAP facilities. In 2007, they returned after being at the Campo Alegre campus.
Today, the building houses more than just the Rectory. It is home to the Main campus of the Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto. This is also known as MHNC-UP. You can also find the Casa Comum here. There is also the University of Porto Shop. And let’s not forget the historic Old Collection Library.
The Faculty of Letters at the University of Porto also plays a vital role. It offers various Masters courses in teaching. These are in areas like Philosophy and Languages.
