The Kurt-Juster-Schule wasn’t always known by that name. The building itself has a long history. It began in 1883 as a village schoolhouse. Alsterdorf was a newly independent municipality then. The address was Alsterdorfer Stra\u00dfe 420. It stood on the corner of Sengelmannstra\u00dfe. Carl Johann Christian Zimmermann designed the original Volksschule. Construction finished in the same year as the foundation stone was laid. The school was expanded in 1895.
World War II brought destruction. In 1944, air raids devastated the school building. It was rebuilt in 1949. A new chapter began in 1964. The school became a dedicated space. It focused on children with physical disabilities. This is also considered the official founding year. In 2008, the school received its current name. It was named after Kurt Juster. He founded the parents’ association “Leben mit Behinderung” that translates to “Living with Disability”.
Today, the Kurt-Juster-Schule is a state-funded special needs school. It supports students’ physical and motor development. The school grounds cover approximately 15,000 square meters. The campus includes a wing building. There is also a gymnasium and three Type-65 classroom buildings.
The Kurt-Juster-Schule offers many activities. One example is an inclusive sports festival. Students participated in various disciplines. They demonstrated their athletic skills. They experienced the joy of community. The school’s Rollstuhlbasketball-Team “Die Alsterroller” showed great effort. They achieved fourth place against strong teams. Students participated in a Ball under the String tournament. One team, “Kurtis L\u00f6wen”, even won in the standard category. Boccia, a Paralympic sport, was also played with skill and focus.
The Kurt-Juster-Schule also focuses on sensory experiences. They created a Snoezelenraum. It is also known as an “Erlebnisraum” or experience room. It offers relaxation and sensory stimulation. This room stimulates the senses. It allows users to experience positive emotions. These emotions are like security and relaxation. The room features calming light effects. There is also relaxing music and aromatic scents. An electric lifter ensures accessibility for all students.
The school emphasizes community. They organize events like the Laternenfest. About 100 people gathered around a fire pit. They walked with self-made lanterns. A guitar trio led them in song. They enjoyed finger foods. They spent time together. The Kurt-Juster-Schule continues to evolve. It embraces innovative approaches. The Motion Composer transforms movements into music. It offers a unique way for students to express themselves creatively.
