Can you imagine measuring a bridge with a person? On the quirky Harvard Bridge, that’s exactly what happened. The Harvard Bridge, affectionately nicknamed the MIT Bridge or the Mass. Ave. Bridge, stretches a remarkable 2,164.8 feet across the Charles River, linking Boston and Cambridge. This steel giant isn’t just a bridge; it’s a testament to a playful prank and a fascinating piece of history. Harvard Bridge’s story began with years of bickering between Boston and Cambridge. Finally, between 1887 and 1891, the two cities collaborated on its construction. Initially designed with a central swing span, the bridge underwent numerous revisions, culminating in a complete superstructure replacement in the late 1980s. This overhaul was necessary due to excessive vibrations and the collapse of a similar bridge, underscoring the importance of structural integrity. Now, for the fun part. Harvard Bridge is famous for its unique unit of measurement: the smoot. In 1958, Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity pledges at MIT used Oliver Smoot, the shortest pledge, as a measuring stick. They marked the bridge’s eastern sidewalk in smoots, with Oliver, all 5 feet 7 inches of him, lying down repeatedly. This resulted in a length of 364.4 smoots “plus one ear,” acknowledging the measurement’s playful imprecision. Oliver Smoot later became president of ANSI and ISO, proving that even playful beginnings can lead to serious accomplishments. These smoot markings are repainted regularly, a testament to the prank’s enduring legacy. During the 1980s reconstruction, the bridge’s designers even incorporated smoot-length sidewalk slabs, solidifying the smoot’s place in Harvard Bridge’s history. So, as you stand on Harvard Bridge, remember you’re not just on a bridge. You’re walking on a piece of history, measured not in feet or meters, but in smoots, a whimsical reminder of a prank that captured the imagination of a city.
