“There is always the possibility that I will be unable to free myself as one never can tell what will happen to a lock.” These were the bold words of Harry Houdini before plunging into the Charles River. We are standing at the Harry Houdini Plaque on the Harvard Bridge. It marks the spot of one of his most daring escapes.

Harry Houdini. The name conjures images of death-defying stunts. He captivated audiences worldwide. But who was this man? What made him risk life and limb for entertainment?

Born Ehrich Weiss, he later adopted the stage name Harry Houdini. He rose to fame as an illusionist and escape artist. Houdini’s specialty was escaping from handcuffs and shackles. His performances were legendary.

In the spring of 1908, Houdini came to Boston. He planned a publicity stunt to promote his upcoming shows. He chose the Harvard Bridge as his stage. The plan was simple but dangerous. He would jump into the Charles River bound by chains and locks.

On May 1, 1908, a crowd of 20,000 people gathered. The mayors of Boston and Cambridge were among the spectators. A Boston patrolman secured Houdini’s hands behind his back with handcuffs. He then chained him to a collar around his neck. A signal sounded. Houdini leaped from the bridge into the cold water 30 feet below.

The crowd held its breath. Seconds stretched into an eternity. After 40 seconds, Houdini resurfaced. He emerged with the restraints in his hands. The crowd erupted in cheers. Houdini had done it again. He had defied the impossible.

This plaque commemorates that daring feat. It was dedicated on May 1, 1994. This was exactly 86 years after Houdini’s jump. The local chapter of the Society of American Magicians placed it here.

Houdini’s connection to Boston goes beyond this single act. In 1906, he staged a breakout from a city jail cell. This was another promotional stunt before performing in Boston theaters. In 1911, he escaped from a 1600-pound “sea monster.” This was likely a dead leatherback turtle.

Houdini was also a critic of spiritualism. He debunked mediums. He even came to Boston in 1924 to discredit a psychic.

Houdini died on Halloween in 1926. But his legend lives on. This plaque is a testament to his daring spirit. It reminds us of a man who challenged the limits of human possibility. As you stand here, imagine the roar of the crowd. Feel the tension as Houdini plunged into the Charles. Think about the legacy of the world’s greatest escape artist. The Harry Houdini Plaque is more than just a marker. It is a portal to a world of magic and mystery.
