“Little place with evergreen oaks.” That’s what Encinitas means. But today, we’re not in Encinitas. We stand before Iglesia católica San Juan Evangelista in San Diego. Its story began long ago.
Back in 1912, some Catholic ladies wanted a new parish. They lived in University Heights. At that time University Heights was part of St. Joseph’s Parish. They asked Fr. Nunan to establish it. He encouraged them. His successor wanted them to stay.
The determined ladies appealed to Archbishop John J. Cantwell. He agreed. In 1913, he appointed Fr. Peter McNellis. Fr. McNellis became pastor of the new parish. It was located in University Heights.
In 1914, the parish worked hard. They wanted to buy land. They wanted to build a church. They bought property at Lincoln and Normal. Fr. Loughlin Golden followed Fr. McNellis. Fr. McCormick assisted him. In 1915, they built the first church. It honored St. John the Evangelist.
That first building served the parish for many years. It was their center of worship. Later, they built a new church. The present Iglesia católica San Juan Evangelista is at Polk and Normal. Bishop Buddy dedicated it on May 30, 1952.
Many priests have served Iglesia católica San Juan Evangelista. Rev. Peter McNellis was first. Rev. L.P. Golden followed him. Rev. Thos F. King served next. Then came Rev. Paul de Munck. Rev. Martin C. Keating followed. Rev. Msgr. John B. Cotter served after him. Rev. Msgr. M.C. O’Connor took his turn. Rev. Vincent Walters followed. Rev. Msgr. Andrew Hanley then served. Rev. Msgr. Anthony Giesing came next. Rev. George Byrne took over. Rev. Philip Sessions then served. Rev. William Dillard followed him. Rev. Henry Rodriguez took his turn. Bp. John P. Dolan then served. Rev. Kevin Casey SJ followed. Rev. Charles Moat SVD is the current priest. He has served since 2021.
Iglesia católica San Juan Evangelista has a vibrant history. It started with determined women. They wanted a place to worship. They overcame obstacles. They built a community. The church has grown and changed. It continues to serve San Diego today.
The Iglesia católica San Juan Evangelista office has specific hours. You can email or call to schedule an appointment. The office is closed on Mondays and Sundays. Tuesday through Friday, it is open from 9 am to 1 pm. It reopens from 2 pm to 4 pm. Saturday is by appointment only.
Think about those early parishioners. They dreamed of a place like this. They built it with faith and hard work. Today, Iglesia católica San Juan Evangelista stands as a testament to their dedication. It is a beacon of faith in the heart of San Diego.
